How to choose a specialty
Good advice from Fat Doctor (hey that's her name for the blog, not mine):
You have to like going to work in the morning, enjoy the intellectual subject matter, like the type of people you work with, tolerate the lifestyle and be qualified to get into that residency. Otherwise it just won't work for youPretty good advice for life in general. I'd only add that if you are thinking of one of the more rigorous specialties, make sure about the lifestyle. I've met a lot of bitter surgeons who either left their program or would have done something different if they had it to do over again. It's not like they don't warn you it will be tough.

Sure, they warn you it's gonna be tough, but as Doc Surg suggested (17th Jan) many of us surgeons-to-be have narcissistic traits and so we ignore the warnings.
No one should go into surgery unless they love it. I tell all my interns that.
If you're telling your interns that, you're about 1 year too late! :-)
