Dr. Andy, I am the last person who would defend creationists. Yes, many of them have no trouble accepting that certain "species" can evolve into certain subsets of that "species", so to speak (e. g., that moths can evolve into moths with spots; bacteria can evolve immunity to an anti-biotic, etc.); they merely believe that one can't get an entirely new "species" from another.
And, classical evolution is silent as to how that first "living cell" formed, though it has a lot to say at how the first life forms got more complex.
